Home renovation continues to be a driving force for homeowners seeking to enhance their living spaces, whether for personal enjoyment, increased functionality, or preparing a property for sale. The motivations behind these significant investments are varied, and recent reports shed light on the evolving trends and the value homeowners find in their projects.
WHY HOMEOWNERS RENOVATE
Understanding the ‘why’ behind renovation is crucial. According to the 2025 Remodeling Impact Report by the National Association of REALTORS®, homeowners undertake projects for several key reasons: “When consumers remodel, it is to upgrade worn-out surfaces, finishes, and materials (27 percent); to improve energy efficiency (19 percent); it is time for a change (18 percent); and because they will be selling in the next two years (18 percent)”. This highlights a blend of practical needs, aesthetic desires, and strategic financial planning.
THE RISE OF OUTDOOR LIVING AND GREEN SPACES

Beyond interior makeovers, outdoor spaces are increasingly becoming a focal point of home renovation. Homeowners are looking to extend their living areas outdoors, creating inviting environments for relaxation, entertainment, and connection with nature. This trend includes a growing interest in sustainable features such as:
Green Roofs: These living roofs offer numerous benefits, including improved insulation, stormwater management, increased biodiversity, and unique aesthetic appeal. They can transform an otherwise unused rooftop into a vibrant garden space.
Permeable Paving and Rain Gardens: Shifting away from impermeable surfaces, homeowners are opting for permeable driveways and patios that allow rainwater to filter naturally into the ground, reducing runoff and replenishing groundwater. Rain gardens, designed to collect and absorb rainwater, further enhance water management while adding beauty to the landscape.
Outdoor Kitchens and Living Rooms: Fully equipped outdoor kitchens, comfortable seating areas, and even outdoor fireplaces are blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living, creating true extensions of the home.
RENOVATION SPENDING AND PROJECT POPULARITY

The financial commitment to home renovation remains substantial. The “2025 U.S. Houzz & Home Renovation Trends” report indicates significant spending, particularly in key areas: “The median spend for major remodels of small kitchens increased by 9% to $35,000, and small primary bathrooms by 13% to $17,000. For high-end renovations, large luxury kitchens started at $150,000, and small luxury kitchens at $90,000. Large luxury bathrooms began at $70,000, and smaller high-end bathrooms at $45,000.” This demonstrates a willingness among homeowners to invest considerably in crucial rooms. The report also notes a shift in popularity, with bathrooms catching up to kitchens in terms of renovation activity, both seeing 24% homeowner participation in 2024.
Whether driven by a desire for improved living, a refreshed aesthetic, or a wise investment, home renovation continues to shape our homes and lifestyles, with a growing emphasis on both interior comfort and sustainable outdoor integration.
